i struggled with comparison a lot
when it came to other guys how big they
were how strong they were or even the
fact that they were so popular and
accepted
and here i am this church boy this
church kid i would be ridiculed even
threatened sometimes but i did not let
it stop me
it’s like from the beginning
god was saying no
i didn’t call you to fit in
i created you to stand out
i’m jeffrey tyler i’m a third grade
teacher here
in charles county maryland
for me
god’s word has always been a central
part of my life it’s always been first
been primary i grew up in a christian
home on christian values whatever god’s
will was
that’s what
my focus should be
we attended church consistently every
sunday uh
mom and dad were really big on that
making sure that we were in church but
they were also
really adamant about making sure that we
had a relationship with god outside of
church
so that the god that we served on
sundays was also the same god that we
served during the week when we were in
school
being a christian
there were times i was teased a lot
i remember being in the car with my mom
and we were driving
and i started crying
are you ready
i was about 14 years old
and i said mom
i don’t like myself
i don’t feel gifted enough as all these
other guys
i had never heard of promise keepers
until i had this best friend who was
telling me about this march we took
about two buses to get downtown and i
will never forget the feeling when we
got off the bus
and
all of these men
just gathered together
in worship
and
it was just such a great feeling
immediately
i felt free
and i remember dr evans coming on stage
and giving the men a charge some of you
men are in the gutter some have been
beaten down by circumstances beaten down
by career beaten down by immorality but
2 000 years ago somebody died who rose
from the dead and he’s saying to the
mall in washington get up
get up
get up you bums jesus loves you
he spoke with such confidence spoke with
such power such conviction
and i knew at that point even more i
have a responsibility
as a human being
as a as an image bearer of christ as a
man made in the image of god
as a son as a student
i have a responsibility and i cannot
turn my back on my responsibility
i think there’s a natural need of
especially as a as a kid there’s a need
to be accepted
and to feel valued
but it just showed me more and more that
my value was in christ and not in man
