why christ came to the garden of
gethsemane to prepare him from for the
cross to remind himself that crushing is
all that he was going through that the
secretions of what was in him was better
than the pressures that oppressed him
and and i’m hoping to write this book to
somebody who has something in them that
that they could not get out any other
way and i want them to understand
that that pressure turns to power
when god does suppressing that’s right
[Music]
joseph yeah joseph what’s better than
that he was he was he was tested in his
affliction yes sir he was tested in his
affliction absolutely and don’t you know
that the reason that joseph could be
strong is because he could look at his
brothers and say what you intended you
intended this for evil
but god but god but god
intended it for good yes
and what i see in in your life that i
admire so much
is that you have kept that but god in
the middle of your story absolutely a
lot of people want to get it out you
intended evil for me it stops right
there right right that’s where their
story stops i think i think you know
i think that’s why god chose him
of all the brothers i think that’s why
god blessed him because joseph had the
capacity yeah
to bless somebody who had hurt him
see see when you start talking about
wine you have to talk about capacity
because growth is there and joseph
exemplified the capacity to be bigger
than his situation
and and so to him whom much is given
much is required yeah and and i really
believe with all of my heart when you
read through the story of joseph
his greatest strength was his ability to
love those who had victimized him
because when he saw him he wept remember
before he disclosed for they recognized
that he was that’s right he had to step
out and weep his heart was so tender
that’s right and i actually think that
when he said you meant it for evil but
god made it good i think he was trying
to comfort them
not chasing them i think you’re right
yeah i’m thinking it’s okay it’s okay
it’s okay it’s okay you meant it for
evil but i’m okay yeah god made it good
i still got there yeah you know the the
the the when you take your story away
from the people who hurt you
and determine in your heart whatever you
did it’s okay
i still got there
you won’t have any reason to be bitter
there you go it in fact
it’s not just
that i got there in spite of you
in many ways i got there because of you
because of you yeah because you didn’t
know it but you were helping you were
helping me you were teaching me you were
helping me you were teaching me you were
training me uh you were preparing me and
i have this this capacity because you
stretched me mm-hmm
god gives us a an ability to reinterpret
our past
rather than see our past as
as rather than see ourselves as victims
of of a difficult past he he gives us
the grace to look back and say oh okay
our sovereign lord was at work even in
that even even in that if god spared not
his own son
but gave him up for us all but gave him
up for us all who who am i to think
that that i am above going through
anything you know why not me job says
the lord knows the way that i take
and when he has tried me i shall come
forth
as as pure gold i may be in the fire
right now
yeah but i shall come forth as few go
and i think that if you can keep the
promise
of the wine with you
while you are being crushed under the
feet
that this is not my final form
that that though i stain the feet of
those who oppress me now this is not my
final form there is something coming out
of me that’s greater than what is
hurting me
and what is coming out of me you will
never be able to stop if you can keep
that in your mind
you will understand why why christ came
to the garden of gethsemane to prepare
him from for the cross to remind himself
that crushing is all that he was going
through that the secretions of what was
in him was better than the pressures
that oppressed him and and i’m hoping to
write this book to somebody who has
something in them that that they could
not get out any other way and i want
them to understand that that pressure
turns to power
when god does the pressing that’s right
we assume that presence of pain is the
absence of god what you’re saying is the
presence of pain can be the best work
absolutely god absolutely the work of
god and if you uh
[Music]
my wisdom is made out of my mistakes
you you only become as smart as you were
a fool
i’m pretty smart then
you know
you know you you
you think about how you try to tell your
children you’re suddenly trying to tell
them what not to do
because i don’t want you to take the
class over
you know i already took the class for
you that doesn’t work don’t try to go
this way go that way yeah and and yet
sometimes they have to have their own
experiences to have their own
relationship with god
uh but but i think that
i think that the word is
is being written in the experience of
our lives even today
that that in some ways we are the 67th
book that we are living epistles read of
men and that god is writing through the
situations on our lives because we are
the only bible some people see
so sometimes my testimony isn’t so much
about what i say
but you watching me survive yeah yeah
what nobody else would have been able to
survive
thereby
by this i know that the lord is with me
for he has not allowed my enemies to
triumph over me
yeah right yeah that’s right
can i read from one of my favorite
authors go ahead go ahead
[Laughter]
if your life is suddenly unstable
and you notice an increase in the amount
of mess and manure placed upon you
that’s great
pay close attention
it is a signal from the lord for you to
look carefully
for the areas where your growth may have
stalled
the vine dresser applies an extra amount
of dung
to a plant
that stubbornly refuses to grow
because the messes of life
serve as the vitamins required
for healthy fruit yes sir
yes sir
yes sir
well you you you
you use kind language there
that describes where some of
well some of the listeners are growth is
smelly business so
yeah growth is smelly business it stinks
yeah yeah growth growth is smelly
business uh birth is messy business
you know i used to think that babies
were born and they look like the gerber
babies and the old movies that when we
were growing up you know the baby they
just pulled the baby out and looked like
the gerber baby yeah but in real life
birth is a messy business and birth is a
smelly business and birth is a painful
business and birth is about pressure
and pushing and the baby is bruised and
the mother is weak and weary
because life is valuable it costs
something and you can’t have life
without labor
you see and that’s what makes it it to
me what makes it valuable
uh is is the baby now in in the old days
they would salt the baby to heal it from
the birthing process
so that there is a certain amount of
healing one of the things i talk about i
just mentioned this real quickly i know
our time is almost over
it’s the pain of recovery
there’s a pain on this side of surgery
that’s different from the pain on that
side of surgery
just because of surgery was uh
correct and effective doesn’t mean that
the patient doesn’t feel pain
that that it hurts to recover
that there is a pain of recovery and
just because you feel pain doesn’t mean
you’re not getting better that’s true in
fact that pain is an indication you are
getting absolutely that’s what i’m
saying to you and anybody who’s tried to
get in shape
knows that it’s no fun
to talk about that oh my god but it
hurts
because it hurts because
it hurts because
you are tearing muscle
and and and as the muscle tear tears it
expands
and anytime you’re going to swell
it it hurts to grow in capacity and so
people
who become these voluminous people it
costs them something that’s a lot
be careful about envying them and
wanting to be them and i i’m going to be
you and i’m going to be the next you and
i’m going to have your mantle you can’t
have my mantle until you’ve withstood my
misery oh that’s good that’s good
i don’t
[Laughter]
we
uh are out of time
oh my goodness i knew this would happen
i knew it
we’re just warming up yeah though we’re
just getting started we’re just warming
up um
a word do you have for somebody who’s
is is is right there in that mess
i i want to say to you that if
[Music]
if you are in that crushing i have been
there
physically emotionally spiritually
financially
in every aspect of my life
i want you to understand something that
whether the lord
scooped down into the ground and pulled
up clay
or set it on a wheel and started
spinning it
or pushed in on it with pressure and
started squeezing it
or set it on a curio after he had fired
it
that regardless of whatever stage it was
in it was always in his hand
[Music]
and i want you to know
that whatever stage you’re in right now
you are still in his hands amen
amen
he loves you
[Applause]
he cares about you
and when it is all over
he will take what was seemingly a
crushing moment
to to produce something in you that is
so
distinguished so fresh
so new
that christ said i will not drink any
more wine
until i drink it new
and my father’s with you
in the kingdom of god so i got to be
there
because he told me he said i’m saving
the next class for us together that’s
good it’s gonna be all right it’s gonna
be good
[Applause]
god told me hurting people hurt people
and so most of the people
you know if if you’re watching and
you’ve been really hurt by somebody
they hurt you out of their hurt
and if you realize that then it does
make it a little bit easier
to forgive them
my father had not been raised right and
there was incest in his home which i
found out later
and
he wasn’t treated right by his dad
and his dad was a christian and yet he
was a mean christian and that doesn’t
always
set well with the people around you
and
so he
he was already had two strikes against
him when he started and that doesn’t
make what he did okay but it does make
it easier
to forgive if you realize that
people are
are hurting you
out of their own pain and then another
chapter in here that i really enjoyed
preaching this message was no parking at
any time okay one day i was driving down
the street and i just saw this sign no
parking at any time and it just like
exploded into me i thought that’s what
people do with their life they park at
the point of their pain
and they don’t go
anywhere else
and i happen to see a movie i don’t know
if you ever saw it’s about
i think it’s called the yellow van or
something and this is actually a true
story it was about a woman
who
was homeless
and
she lived in this yellow van that she
had painted yellow
and
she
they kept running her off the streets
she’d park on the street and they’d let
her stay there so long so
finally she went to this person’s house
and asked if she could park
in their driveway for a certain period
of time because she found out she could
get some
some money from the government monthly
if she had an address but she didn’t
have one so he didn’t really want to do
it this actually happened over in
england but he let her
park there well she ended up staying
there for like years and years and years
but the
the ultimate
i mean it’s a long story but to get to
the long and the short of it she was a
a concert pianist
she’d prayed i mean played before
kings and queens and was just
phenomenal she really really really
loved god so she became a nun
and she happened to have
a mother superior that was
not very kind and was really jealous of
her
piano gift and so she told her that god
wanted her to give it up because it was
prideful
and so that hurt her so bad and the way
they treated her hurt her so bad
that she ended up leaving and having
some kind of like a mental breakdown and
then at one point in her life she had
hit a young man in the street
and killed him
and so between carrying the guilt of
that
and what had happened to her she ended
up being homeless
and living in living in her van
and
of course this this part of the story
was fictional but when she got to heaven
the first person
she died in her van by the way you know
you die where you park yeah and so
she uh
first person she saw when she got to
heaven was this young man that she
had blamed herself for killing all these
years and he said you didn’t kill me i
stepped out in front of your car on
purpose oh my goodness and so
me being abused i carried the guilt of
that i thought what’s wrong with me that
my father wants to do that to me and how
many people
somebody else is
dysfunctional and they’re hurting you
but i mean how many women whose husbands
cheat on them think it’s my well it must
have been my fault
you know i wasn’t pretty enough or i
wasn’t this enough you know the devil
always wants us to think we’re not
enough and that’s why people
mistreat us and
i just don’t want to see people just
park their life
at the point of their pain
and stay there the rest of your life
living some kind of a half-life
when jesus died for you to be made
completely
whole and this whole thing about the
soul being healthy
i mean the things that happened to me
and the things that happened to other
people it affects how you think
that’s why the bible says clearly that
one of the first things that has to
happen
is you have to learn how to get your
mind renewed through the word of god
like you know the devil told me all my
life what’s wrong with you well the
first thing i study is righteousness in
christ yes
so
the enemy wants to remind us daily of
everything that’s wrong with us
but
the bible says he that knew no sin
became sin that we might be made the
righteousness of god in christ and so
the more you think you’re wrong the more
wrong things you’ll do
but the more you believe that you’re
right with god through jesus sacrifice
the more right things you’ll do
god never expects us to do anything
without giving us the equipment to do it
so he forgives us first
so we can forgive other people
he’s merciful to us
so we can be merciful to others he loves
us that ability yeah so we can love
other people and so he never asks us to
do anything that’s not going to be for
our benefit
so even when something is hard
god’s trying to set you free from
something that’s going to be much harder
if you keep it so that to me was a
really important chapter in the book
because you had you have to
you know you have to make a decision
that you’re going to put your life in
drive again
and stop just
blaming everything on what people did to
you or what happened to you we’ve heard
it said
similarly that the point of your pain
will either be your prison or your
platform
what about the day-to-day like what do i
do next the right thing along the way
even when you’re hurting can you speak
to that
yeah you know
i think um
i was literally uh just recently talking
to my daughter who’s 30 years old and
whatever she was asking me
my answer as i answered her
you know i heard mommy’s voice
because it was
the same thing you know it’s it’s a new
problem to her but it’s not to me but
one of the things we know mommy would
say all the time is this too shall pass
when you have
a history
with god and you know that the thing
that seems the most difficult for you in
a moment
that you’ll get past it so one way or
another you’ll you’ll get past it you’ll
learn from it you’ll grow from it you’ll
experience god in a new way
um
that is
often just the next right thing you
don’t have
you don’t and i keep talking about our
history but i even remember our
grandmother saying because you know
daddy’s a doctorate of theology and our
uncle was a doctor of sociology he had a
doctor of sociology and i said
did people ask you how did you do that
like how did you
have these kids that were so highly
educated and she said i just kept doing
the next right thing to have children
who were law-abiding citizens and were
good people like i wasn’t trying to
achieve that right and i think when
people would ask mommy and daddy about
us how do you do that like how do you
get four kids who are all still involved
in your church or involved in ministry
what they were doing was the next right
thing and for mommy that was fixing
dinner
and making goulash and putting cheese on
we don’t know what it was but it tasted
good because cheese was on it
and and the and the idea that
this was not necessarily the specific
thing i don’t think you could correct me
that you had in mind
it was just that we would love god
love each other
and be faithful
um so i think the next right thing is
look at where you are
and what i was saying to my daughter
today is often we’re looking at the big
thing and thinking how do we get through
the big thing
moses asked god the same question when
god stopped by the burning bush and said
all right so it’s time i need you to
tell pharaoh to let my people go
and moses was like how am i going to do
that
and god said what do you have in your
hand
so we’re often looking purpose and
calling and what am i supposed to do and
how’s god going to get me through this
and we walked with mommy through that
season one day at a time
getting her what she wanted to drink
trying to make her comfortable
being there for each other
and so the next right thing is not the
next right big thing
it’s usually the next right small thing
and because it’s the next right small
thing it’s usually something that’s
obvious to you to do right and it’s easy
it’s right there
so i think if i could say anything to
encourage everybody from my experience
it’s
stop trying to get over the mountain
and just make sure you don’t stumble on
that one rock that’s in front of you and
just keep going forward that’s great
that’s amazing yeah that’s amazing
you’re a beast she is i was actually
about to say that and i thought maybe i
shouldn’t say you’re a beast that’s a
good thing
a beast is a good that’s a loving word
in our family um
somehow somehow a lot of loving word in
our family and yes for those of you
watching who are thinking are they
saying daddy and mommy of we still call
our parents daddy daddy just so you know
that’s
i’m that’s yeah i’m proud of that yes
the daddy you mentioned daddy you
mentioned
disruption
and i i always get weird when i’m
quoting you because you’re tony evans
and i’m tony evans jr and it feels weird
because you’re such an amazing
communicator a beast because you’re such
a beast
divine reset a lot of times i mean sorry
divine disruption
disruptions in our life are god’s um
god is wanting to reset us and uses the
disruption to do that can you talk about
what that that means
god creates or allows confusion chaos
trouble
because he’s trying to
get things that
are either out of order back in order
or to take us to a new level hebrews
chapter 12
talks about god shaking things
in the physical because he wants to do
something in the spiritual
so when there is disturbance in the five
senses of our lives
in the environment of our lives and the
chaos of the culture
it is because he is shaking things to
remake something
in its proper order things have gotten
either out of order or there is a new
purpose that he is moving to
and so he will he will allow pharaoh to
get tougher
so that you can leave egypt
and not get comfortable there so he will
create so i just want to encourage
people if you’re going through
pain struggle grief disappointment
while those feelings are real and you
don’t deny them
also ask god what new thing
what new experience i love job 42 he’s
come through great loss
i mean in 24 hours this whole world
falls apart
his business his family his workers his
children his health
everything falls apart and he never even
found out why the book never tells job
about the conversation between god and
satan but in chapter 42 he makes a
powerful statement he says
i’ve heard about you with the hearing of
the ear
i’ve been to bible study been to church
been the small group all that been to
sunday school
but now i have seen you with my own eyes
so ask god when your world falls apart
to make himself visible to you in a new
way and he wants to do it
because of what he allowed to disrupt
your ease
and your comfortable situation right
there
at tbn our mission is to use every
available means to reach as many
