be seated well good morning it is my
first time to Tulsa and I’m so turned up
because we’re gonna turn over Tulsa OK
no listen y’all might not know me my
name is Bianca waters old tough I hail
from the promised land
aka California and but I have heard
about you I have seen what God is doing
here through the pastures to the
leadership through y’all I just wanna
say thank you for believing the mission
of this house the message and is coming
out of here is going around the world
around the world and you get to be part
of that some people sit down and watch a
move of God but you all are in the
middle of them oh my god on behalf of
those that are part of the
transformation they should have we just
thought they thank you thank you thank
you and we’re all watching online we
love you we’re so glad you’re with us
this morning so let me tell you our
access roads mentioned my husband and I
are charged planters eight months ago we
launched a church and so I’ve been
keeping an eye on this church because
you guys are just setting the pace you
guys have set the bar and I look at
Pastor Mike and Natalie and I’m like so
cool like they’re in some fashion and
you’re all right your own music like I’m
the girl I can’t get her life together
like I think I’m the most disqualified
person to be leading a church right now
to have any relatives that feel like a
hot mess Express to honest people thank
you thank you praise God what about
thank you brother I got ups oh thank you
one more the back-trace guys listen
one day my life could be put together
but it ain’t that day and I remember I
was heading to a conference and I knew
that the Lord was gonna do something so
I just wanted to precaution myself with
any attack of the enemy and I packed my
bag and I made a to-do list and to not
forget listing the whole night
hmm but in truth beyond confession I
wake up the next morning and pack my bag
and I said not today say time’ remember
everything everything everything my
to-do list my my my bible my ipad my
charger everything – my luggage head to
LAX I get to the Delta desk and they
said what good morning this is all tough
we’d like to inform you thing you have a
first class upgrade hey yeah thank you
Jesus won’t he do it hey guy I’m sitting
in first class like I’m bushi I’m
sipping my sparkling water in my pinky
out lace is so common yes how’s the buzz
of me over here you know no it’s not my
life let’s fake it you know say to you
make it so I’m like I’m I’m ready I’m
ready to download from god I’ll be at
30,000 feet I’m going to this conference
I’m like yes Lord do it again so I pull
out my notebook and I pull out my Bible
I pulled my journal I realized that my
bag was very light so then I open up my
bag and I realize sweet Jesus
I call him a husband I said babe we have
an emergency I don’t know what to do and
he’s freaking out on the other hand
saying what’s wrong is the fight but you
okay what happened happened with all
seriousness I forgot my makeup bag in
the bathroom now listen listen y’all
natural Tulsa folk you’re like what’s
the big deal listen
some of your husband’s in here you know
you know when you’re lying I know you’re
wearing a no eyebrows or lashes you know
like hell’s about to open up right there
right so I called my husband about how I
said it’s emergency I’d love to do like
I need concrete for my face I need
eyelashes so long like when people when
I believe people feel the Spirit of God
you know like that’s my level see I wear
makeup like RuPaul okay I don’t look
like this and she said bless his heart
this is hard he said be what if the Lord
wants you to be natural natural get
behind me Satan this is spiritual
warfare okay now it was a very traumatic
moment and I know you’re like wow you
are dramatic listen it may not feel like
trauma to you but it was trauma to me in
fact from psychological terms there is
capital T trauma that’s trauma of like
death that is divorce that is terminal
illness and then there’s lower case T
trauma which includes things that are
equally as and as nerve-wracking and
heartbreaking but less of a scope of
dramatics less of scopes of terminal
issues but the thing is is is is that
trauma affects all of us whether we
realize it or not and so we’re kicking
off this is fun month and we’re gonna
start with this understanding that when
trauma happens to us what if we get to
hold on to the fact that trauma will not
destroy us that sounds real good as some
of y’all are with me this side is the
holy side praise God we’re gonna work
with y’all all right just gonna bless
your heart right now so you know I
learned in the South with some blesses
your heart they’re really out blessing
your heart what they think you sure is
do business ha ha
today we’re gonna be honest in the house
of God whether you want to play or not
this is what statistics will tell us
trauma is affecting all of us and it
might be that you’re in the middle of a
divorce because 50% of marriages are
facing divorce you might be experiencing
infidelity because 20% of relationships
are experiencing infidelity half of this
room is feeling low grade or high grade
depression sixty percent of people in
this conversation right now are facing
anxiety forty percent of people online
and in this room are facing the feeling
of being alone and isolated eighty
percent of people in the scope of this
conversation eighty percent are facing
debt and fifty percent of us are trying
to lose weight to the glory of God but
you know bread is so good you’re like
why Jesus but what if we could face
trauma I knew that it wasn’t the end
what if I were to tell you right now
that though life sucks yours do you
don’t have to so if you’re know take on
what you pull out your Bible on what you
pull your notebook and I want you to
write down the title of this message
which is how to have your life not suck
I heard a Hebrew scholar who lives we’re
stuffing some words and I learned that
the word tragedy do y’all know the word
tragedy is not in the ancient Hebrew
language and the scholar went on to tell
me and to teach us that the word tragedy
isn’t there because with the ancient
Hebrews believed that if God had not
redeemed the situation thank God was not
done and I went on a two-year journey
through the Book of Ruth the Book of
Ruth is a small four chapter book in the
Old Testament because I didn’t I haven’t
seen this played out any more than in
the life and times of two women from the
Old Testament out of the Book of Ruth
and so what I wanted to do is kind of do
a 30,000 view of this beautiful book
sandwiched in the Old Testament so if
you brought your Bibles with you please
turn with me to Ruth chapter one I’m
gonna open up with a quick word of
Prayer
father God we ask you to bless this mess
maybe pastor might come back and fix any
mistake I make in Jesus name
man you said Amy a little too loud
sister but I like you anyway Saul riding
in roof chapter 1 as we’re gonna start
off in and in verse 1 through 2 we learn
about a man who was from a town called
Bethlehem Bethlehem means House of bread
and they were experiencing a famine so
he takes his family to a different land
and this is where he picked this up in
chapter 1 verse 3 now Elimelech Naomi’s
husband died and she was left with her
two sons they married Moabite women
that’s important about your Bible
highlighted circle it if your neighbor
brought their Bible Circle it for them
there you go one named Orpah and the
other roof after they had lived there
for about ten years both Malin and
Killian also died and now ami was left
without her two sons and her husband so
we have an interesting set of characters
that have rolled on to the scene but the
two that I want to highlight in this
moment right now is Naomi
who’s the matriarch of the family and
her name if you like to geek out with me
some word nerds in here her name means
sweet and pleasant and the other
character they’re gonna pay attention to
today her name is Ruth and the name Ruth
means friendly and so friendly and sweet
and pleasant have experienced loss after
loss after loss their dreams are buried
six feet under three times over
father-in-law dead
brother-in-law dead husband dead blow
after blow hit after hit trauma after
trauma these women had the fortitude to
stand back up and I want us as people
who believed in our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ and if you don’t yet you
will by the end of the service I’m
claiming that in the name of Jesus but
what I’m believing right now is that we
– when trauma hits us if we can stand up
and say if this is not done then my god
ain’t done if this is not redeemed then
God is not done these women are our
guide they felt that way and we have to
now here’s some context Naomi was a Jew
but Ruth Ruth description tells us she’s
a mole – she’s from a land called Moab
now Moab was a city that no good Jew
wanted to go to
good Jews do not go to Moab in fact this
city was started from a father who slept
with his daughter and they had a son
named Moab from then the sin just
spirals out and the culture think of its
like a cross between like Vegas and
Bangkok turn-ups all the time its
parties is debauchery it’s beautiful
people and then we meet this mole bodies
by the name of Ruth Ruth she’s you know
she’s a hard-working hustler if you read
the book which I highly encourage you I
just wanna make this book so appetizing
are you gonna go home this week and read
it as a personal devotion in the name of
Jesus but he is a hard-working hustler
she a little rough around the edges you
know and she comes from a crazy ethnic
family so so in my mind and my mind’s
eye if I were to personify her as a
person
she’s like a biblical cardi B you know
like she got some attitude and we have a
tendency to think that like Road this
with his sweet docile girl like on this
road I’ve lost my husband Naomi but I
will follow you know this girl has an
attitude on the desert dusty road she
turns tonight on me she said no I’m
mommy listen okay where you go I will go
your people be my people your God oh my
god okay like Sheree with her that
that’s a big tall order that is a tall
order listen okay let me just pause for
a second kids it is my first time
teaching in Tulsa
so some of you are like where did we
come today okay I’m Mexican which means
that my dad is Mexican my moms Puerto
Rican everybody hey
for the whooping Rican living in Tulsa
god bless you sister and you have to
understand that my love for narrative
storytelling and having a very young age
very young age my grandmother my I love
my Puerto Rican grandmother I’d go to
her house and we’d sit on her couch with
the clear plastic covers your legs just
sweat and you’re like screeching
everywhere she pour me a cup of coffee
at the age of six and
pottery can and we would watch her
stories her soap operas oh you are do
you already know where I’m going but see
my fear is that here in Tulsa when I say
soap operas you’re probably thinking
like Luke and Laura and like young and
the restless’ General Hospital what Life
to Live but when I talk about big bold
moves yes yes but when I talk about soap
operas you need to not talk about this
thing called novellas all right
that’s a whole other level of crazy
right there and some of y’all you know
don’t understand the difference let me
tell you real quick what the difference
is in in a soap opera the beautiful
fair-skinned woman with neatly combed
hair very light makeup probably
bareMinerals she’s like standing there
with a svelte waist thighs that
definitely don’t touch as her forlorn
lover has just broken up with her and
she buried sanely says but John please
don’t leave me I love you and then a
novela somebody comes in in a Dukey
booty dress you know her hair is back
home like a B hi she got ten pounds of
makeup on eyelashes so long when she
bleeds you actually feeling through the
screen and she lives in her forlorn
lover and screams I don’t need nothing
on me I care but again then someone runs
in shoots Juanito you find out that Y
needles or sing her baby daddy you’re
like oh my god
that’s the way I read the Bible okay
and I’m so tired yeah
Oh y’all came to play no boo-boo you
boring okay no so check out when I only
said after they leave Moab they’re going
back to Bethlehem and they roll up into
the house of bread and this is what she
says she says in verse 19 so the two
women went until they came to Bethlehem
when they arrived in Bethlehem the whole
town was stirred because of them the
woman explained can this be my homie and
Naomi Yiddish actually says oh they
don’t call me Naomi she told them call
me Mara because the Almighty has made my
life very bitter I went away for but the
Lord has brought me back empty why call
me Naomi
the Lord has afflicted me the Almighty
has brought misfortune about upon me now
I want us to go there and understand
this would have been traumatic for us to
lose a husband and sons but in a
patriarchal society where women did not
have voting rights property rights land
rights financial rights name rights they
lost everything and this woman had the
space to come in and say I’m upset I’m
sad no in a patriarchal society if your
husbands are gone and your sons are gone
ideally there’d be an heir and a spare
to take over the name but since that
wasn’t the case my only as scripture
tells us in roots chapter 1 when you
read it this week for homework that she
says what can I give you I’m too old I
can’t get knocked up anymore like wait
it’s done and then grew she was
infertile we could say knocked up in the
house of God Ruth
she was barren she couldn’t have a baby
so what is Naomi say I love the realness
she says don’t call me sweet that’s not
my name call me bitter because the Lord
has dealt very better leave me I love
her authenticity I love her realness and
you know where she came to have that
honest conversation
she came to the house of bread she went
back to Bethlehem with her community and
it’s okay to not be okay
Church but she did it in her beat group
she did in her community she came to TC
and said I love God but I don’t
understand in fact right now if I’m
honest with you I’m a little salty and
we could see this and say well that’s
just you being bitter what happens when
your business goes bust what happens
when you experience infidelity in your
marriage what happens if you are you
know single for a little bit too long
you are sexy single and sanctified but
all of a sudden you hear the biological
clock ticking in your head and you just
feel like let me just sleep with anybody
who has too lazy to walk because the
thirst is real I’m parched
I’m deep operated I need Jesus to do
America are you better
I might my fear is that we can come to
church and sometimes some amazing saints
will come and put some pretty platitude
of spirituality and be like Oh give it
just gonna be okay just don’t be bitter
bitters bad Ephesians says bitterness is
bad Hebrew says don’t let it ruin a
bitterness come in bitter this is bad if
you were bitter you are bad Romans you
8:28 says there all things work together
for good you know what stop I know that
I have the tattoo on my forearm like a
hipster that says that but right now
right now I’m questioning the goodness
of God
I hate being good cuz my life am bitter
so for you to have your life not suck we
learn from basic principles I the
PlayBook of Ruth I want you to write
down this number one the decisions you
make today determine your tomorrow the
decisions you make today determine your
tomorrow now what they didn’t know
though their lives were pockmarked with
pain what they didn’t know was that
something was about to change that
through loss God was gonna do what
others said was impossible others could
have written them off others could have
said it’s done in the grave bye Felicia
tell them boy bye it’s done it’s done
but we stand on our salvation today
because the faithfulness of these two
women imma back this up with some
scripture troubled me to Ruth chapter 2
now Naomi had a relative on her
husband’s side a man of standing from
the clan of Allah Malik whose name was
Boaz and Ruth the Moabitess said to
Naomi let me go to the fields and pick
up the leftover grain behind anyone
whose eyes I find favor now he said to
her go ahead my daughter so we find
these women back in Bethlehem without
two pennies to rub together they are
hopeless husbandless childless there’s
nothing but then hope enters into the
beginning of chapter two with a man
named Boaz oh I love that name and there
will be people in here right now that
are a little salty be like I don’t like
Bible names they’re so lame listen Boaz
is better than yo ass you want to know
why because Boaz means strength
Boaz means the Valor Boaz means
integrity yeah
single ladies take know you wanna Boaz
not a broke-ass okay in the
I’m salt and pepper what a man what a
man what a man what a mighty good man
and yet the year all right you got her
back all right on the brink of
starvation Ruth asked if she can get a
job you love that even though life
sucked for Ruth she was still
responsible and she got her butt in gear
I love that I want us to pull up a
powerful principal at a ruse playbook
write this down when life sucks
don’t quit work now I’m not talking
about just going you know getting a job
at Starbucks as a barista or whatever no
no I’m talking about go to work
spiritually go to work emotionally go to
work are relationally do the work to be
healthy even in moments that may feel
tragic and you might be sitting in here
today and feeling like others had said
that you are a lost cause others have
written you off and said they’re not
gonna change they’re gonna repeat the
general sight generation was like those
of everyone before them maybe worse
god forbid you’ve written yourself off a
couple two years ago now my team and I
have embarked in going into prisons and
jails to provide resources and
conferences for our incarcerated
brothers and sisters and we had gone
into Lubbock Texas and I mean I preached
there’s no better place to preach in
prison not only can they not leave you
know it’s brunch time no no they can’t
leave but they are hungry for the word
of God
so we preached in about 107 women said
yes to Jesus on that day and one of them
pray God amen
one of them was a woman by the name of
Bridget now what I heard from other
people was Bridget was a G like she’s
super hardcore
rough like she was in there for a number
of things I would let her tell her story
and one day her story will be heard
around the world that what I do know but
but no one believed that Bridget saying
yes to Jesus that day actually caused a
causal change in her heart she had
written off by so many people she had
fought with so many people she actually
fought with one of the prison guards and
because she liked knock someone out
she’s put in the Shu for two months if
you don’t know the Shu google it praise
God
so when she said yes to Jesus she pulled
me aside at the end of the conference
and she said hey would you be able to
pray with me because I still have seven
years of my sentence I want to be
reunited with my daughter she’s pregnant
and I want my life to change I said okay
here’s the thing with prison ministry is
that you’d be able to meet with someone
and have a great connection but you
don’t know what happens to them
afterwards but I prayed in faith and I
spoke over the negativity that has been
just bathing and surrounding this woman
and how hard her life was and why she
was the way that she was well a week
later she was transferred to a
maximum-security prison to serve the
seven-year remainder on her sentence but
my God is so good my God is so faithful
cuz a week in the warden called her and
said we want to reward you for your
positive behavior at the last
institution and here and you will serve
one more year of her sentence and then
be released but wait we got Levela we
wonder why because we she was released a
year later she was released on a
Thursday on Sunday where does she find
herself in the house of God she went to
her Bethlehem nervous how she was gonna
be perceived an ex-con an ex-inmate she
comes into the church and she sits in
the very very very last row she’s in the
very last row nervous and apprehensive
about who was gonna be there she turns
to her right and who does she see the
prison guard who she beat up in prison
who stands up walks over to her hugs her
and says you were not an inmate you were
my sister in Christ
Oh buddy gets better because she was
reunited with her daughter and her
granddaughter and they’re walking with
the Lord I’m going to show you a picture
of Bridget and I want to thank God for
what he’s doing right now our God is
good
our God is faithful if you are not dead
then God is not done
look it point to you might be one step
away from stepping into God’s abundant
blessings
look at verse three of chapter two so
she went out entered a field and began
to glean behind harvesters glean is
collecting wheat during this case barley
as they turned out she was working in a
field belonging to Boaz who was from a
clan of a little egg this phrase as it
turned out is better translated it just
so happened in some of your translations
I was gonna say the Biv which is the
Vianca International Version me I Pastor
Mike we’ll have our own version on you
to uh what is it you version it there
you go yes but this expression of it
just so happened I want to just pause
for a second because that isn’t an
American idiom based on a theological
understanding of God’s providential good
he is in control of everything
therefore we have our American
expression nothing just happens you know
where that’s rooted in an understanding
of biblical providential care of a good
God this phrase nothing just happens is
an indication that God is in control of
everything
Providence encompasses every aspect of
created order from morning tonight from
beginning to end from heaven to earth
from animate to inanimate from
individuals to Nations from hours to
ages from a weeds to wheat from birth to
death to the catastrophe to come
everything our good God is over
everything that is why nothing just
happens look at what the Baker Dec ssin
area of biblical theology says to
breakdown Providence in God’s wisdom
power righteousness in love he is
hastening lis slowly to work out his
eternal purposes for his own glory and
for our eternal good his glory I were
good his glory our good his glory our
good when we go through trauma when we
go through trials we go the tribulation
life sucks this is where your glory and
my good I love holding on to that guard
I’m holding on to that and I’m believing
that you are good I were quote what the
psalmist says I will see the goodness in
the land of the living so Ruth
coincidentally finds herself here in
this field so to paint the picture
imagine you being Ruth coming to Tulsa
homeless living in a homeless shelter
recycling aluminum cans to make a living
you are eating at the soup kitchen and
the one person you know in Tulsa is
experiencing chronic depression okay
that’s Ruth’s life and no matter what
we’re facing they would hit rock bottom
and to add I love that scripture
scripture reads like a novella remember
it adds to the drama it just so happens
as it turned out this is like saying lo
and behold what great luck hey what a
chance
well good fortune karma was totally on
their side like whatever expression you
want to use here the beautiful thing is
no more else in the Old Testament do we
see this phrase no where no words you
want to know why it was an ancient
writing device it was like humor it was
tongue-in-cheek it was irony it’s the
equivalent of saying she just so
happened to move from Moab to Bethlehem
she just so happened to be starving she
just so happened to move from Bethlehem
to Moab and starving and just so
happened to go to work she just so
happened to go into a field she just so
happened to go in a field of a man named
Boaz who happened to be her relative he
happened just so happened to be a
relative who was single and rich and
sexy just by his name okay that’s a word
for someone some single ladies in here
like I love man that’s beautiful you
want man that biblical okay like that’s
what you want that’s what you want she
just so happened to go into that field
this is where I want to pause and say
this is not happenstance circumstance or
chance this is Providence
God is in control of everything
and sometimes God will move visibly
sometimes he’ll move visibly the Red Sea
will part mana will fall a bush will
talk but for most of us including Ruth
God works invisibly she coincidentally
randomly ended up in a field that just
so happened to belong to Boaz
so when you feel like you’ve lost your
way you can’t find your way we trust our
way maker and as Ruth decided to go to
work
so should we this gets us to 0.3 your
end just might be your beginning now
I’ve said this in this message but as
long as I have been a child my daddy
always said if you are not dead then God
is not done and that sounds real good
you like to preach that and say Amen and
come on somebody take me to Zion like we
like to play like that in a safe place
like here but what happens walk out
these doors and God is silent what
happens when our marriage is in the
rocks what happens when our wayward
child is strung out on drugs what
happens and we can’t get that job and
sometimes in the silent places it feels
scary the one person who could change a
situation was Boaz now Boaz was referred
to in this book is a kinsman redeemer
he’s the one that could take them as
their family now they had a great lunch
third lunch date went awesome and
chapter two go read it remember has
their homework and let chapter 2 that a
great lunch take but then he like
ghosted her he like didn’t chirp he
didn’t ask him his line to the DMS there
was none of that he like he’s silent so
then in chapter 3 verse 3 mama Naomi has
any good meddling Jewish mother-in-law
she was like hey Ruthie come here
darling I need you to shower I need you
it smell like them go put on some
perfume changeless clothes there’s a
party I gotta go to now why did she do
that because I only knew that harvest
season was ending and harvest season was
ending the Ruth was not gonna be around
boa Sabu has is not around Ruth the
house was balls gonna follow through and
though what’s gonna happen is they’re
gonna be like jobless and homeless and
money listen desperate so she encourages
her to go take care of herself to catch
Boaz his eye now here’s the word that’s
not the message her name here’s a word
for it a single you single right
like a Pringle you know you know let me
give you a little words out of from mob
and Iommi
take a shower okay put on some perfume
have two eyebrows iron your shirt okay
like this is this is God’s blessing over
your life all right come on pick this up
after mama
Naomi tells Ruth okay this is what I
want you to do make sure he eats and
when he’s done with the harvest party
he’s gonna go lay on the threshing floor
why because robbers would come and try
to take the grain so mom now is she’s
smart she encourages Ruth and picked
this up in chapter 3 verse 9 Ruth is at
the feet of Boaz and he says who are you
he asked I am your servant Ruth she said
spread the corner of her garment over me
since you are my kinsman redeemer now I
want to pause on this interesting phrase
because about Ruth knew that for their
life to be together for their life to be
safe they needed Boaz to take them as
their own but notice that she did not
offer her body to get what she wanted
she didn’t offer her body she knew to
use her brains see Ruth already knew my
one second my one sentence purity talk
no ringy no dingy okay you’re welcome if
you don’t know what dingy is ask Pastor
Mike because you know he loves to talk
about that right this this phrase oh
this phrase spread the corner of her
garment over me this is an idiom for
marry me she essentially said boo me up
babe
well we up marry me you’re my kinsman
redeemer take me as your own and Ruth
knew for her life not to suck she had to
make some brave decisions and so will we
and know this your decision will not
impact just your life but the lives yet
to come we hosted our third prison
conference and there was word going
around from various wardens in the state
of Texas about what what we were doing
and so a warden called me and said hey
we we would love we know that you’re
coming here for a woman’s conference
would you mind doing a men’s conference
why was so excited I said yes and I hung
with phone I’m like I think I might be a
little under qualified so call my daddy
pastor Pancho waters out of East Los
Angeles California I said dad will you
come with me he’s absolutely I’ll be
there and I in flight we were talking
about the conference and he said isn’t
ironic that we’re both doing this
together I said what do you mean he said
well that were both going to jail
together I said yeah I said why he said
well I’ve been to jail my dad had been
to jail not once not twice but three
times and I just found out about it
two things hit me in that moment number
one I’m hardcore cuz my dad’s a G okay
but yes but then the other side was my
God my God
you are so faithful that the decision
that my dad made to change his life
didn’t just affect his life and didn’t
affect my life but the thousands who
have come and received Jesus at my dad’s
Church and that day my dad and I get
pretty got to preach to incarcerated men
the goodness of Jesus his life his death
his burial his resurrection to the
marginalized to the oppressed to the
Unforgiven to receive forgiveness in
Jesus name and the best part I got to
stand before them and say look at the
effect of one man who made a decision to
change his life the decisions we make
affect not just us for the next
generation if you are not dead then my
god is not done and my fear is that I’m
seeing an entire generation frustrated
in the sucky seasons and the sucky
moments and saying I just I’m carrying
up the now not later so we see them we
see them we see that we have friends you
know they buy a house that’s out of
their means they go on these tropical
vacations and put an Instagram filter on
it everything’s great but to charge me
to the credit card we we end up having
great five minutes in bed and we
compromise our entire destiny because
something with two legs and can walk try
to hit at me and holler at me we are
worried about the now and not the later
but we need to care about a good legacy
not a good weekend
which is the last boy I wanted to hold
on to don’t think about your legacy
brothers and sisters build your legacy
decision by decision day by day week by
week and here by year in Chapter four
this is the final chapter we see that
ruse proposal was taken seriously bow
has ain’t no fool you know Chompy was
like oh yes i will take you and your
crazy mama okay I’ll say bow the are
right and we see in true fairy tale form
Boaz marries Ruth when we picked this up
in verse 13 the woman who could not get
pregnant he picked us up in 13 so boaz
took ruth and she became his wife when
he made love to her the Lord enabled her
to conceive and she gave birth to a son
a barren widowed outcast pagan worship
her from Moab became a one hit wife
being a Moabite mommy this is the stuff
that Disney fairy tales are made out of
and here’s the best part
it didn’t stop there the story didn’t
end there the best part I believe of
this entire book is the last fortune 4
verses of chapter 4 it’s listed as a
genealogy a genealogy is basically like
a Hebrew phonebook it’s like your
daddy’s daddy’s daddy’s daddy daddy’s
daddy’s tribe so you know where you came
from and the story ends not just for
baby Obon though that’d be amazing I
want you to skip down to verse 20 and
verse 18 it says this is the family line
of Perez and it lists out daddy’s name
after daddy’s name after daddy’s name
and get down to verse 21 so I’m in the
father of Boaz bow as the father of who
church oh come on
sure she got wake up okay Boaz the
father of Obed the father of Jesse the
father of who King David this is not the
last time that we see the name Ruth in
fact this beautiful story goes from not
just Oh bed and to Jesse and from Jesse
to King David and from King David to
King Jesus no it goes even
or it goes further it goes higher we
level up because in Matthew we see the
genealogy of Jesus the next time we see
the name Ruth it is in the lineage of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
Ruth is a reminder that is not what has
been done to you
or what has been dealt to you but what
you do with what God has given you and
I’m not just pontificating some peoples
of going just to be smart listen I say
this is a first generation American of
Latino descent my parents came here with
the dream and a mission we lived
oppressed oppressed people of color
living in a concrete jungle of East Los
Angeles I couldn’t rerun her spell at
the age of 12 I was obese I weighed more
than my father I could have been written
off by anyone and everyone but God God I
want to see people that believe that God
is good but even when life sucks you
don’t have to we can build a legacy we
can build a legacy and our legacy isn’t
to give money to our children and give
them a mansion you remember the legacy
is Jay by day building a spiritual
foundation roof no this roof know that
she was gonna build the spiritual
foundation and a biblical legacy
contrary to our regular legacy a
biblical legacy is our contribution into
the next generations the foundation of
faith that they get to stand on Ruth
know this she knew this that with every
sacrifice she gave with every trial she
endured with every promise that she held
onto from God that she was adding to the
spiritual foundation of the faith that
we now stand upon today and this is a
ripple effect this is a ripple effect
because you will leave it like I see
good or bad the question is which one
are you gonna leave because you will
leave a legacy what will you like a
Seabee we make our decisions about the
future we must remember that this is not
about us dare I say dare I say we find
our purpose we’d give her life away and
close them aback this up because Ruth
knew this Queen Esther knew this Paul
the Apostle knew this most importantly
Jesus noticed in the face of trial
trauma and tribulation their purpose was
proven when they gave their life away
Ruth gave her food away so others can
live
sir and sir gave her privilege and her
power away so that others can live
Paul the Apostle gave Ali his prestige
and prominence so others can live
Jesus Christ gave His life so others can
live if you don’t want your life to suck
get the life away
give your life away and see what God
does take our ordinary acts place in the
hand of an extraordinary God and the
legacy that we leave in our wake so
today I want to take a quick moment
don’t take a quick moment because we’re
gonna walk out these doors and my fear
is that this message is gonna be muddled
and muted by the voices in your head and
the voices from the outside and I want
us to be real here in the house of God
because here’s the thing you could lie
to your co-workers you glad your kids
you can lie to her class may take a lot
of your spouse you could even lie to
yourself but you can’t lie to God so in
this moment it’s okay to feel like my Oh
me it’s okay to be like I’m facing a
really really rough season and I need
God to reveal himself we want to pray
for you
so in this moment I’m just gonna ask
that me bow our heads and close our eyes
because I want to create it just a
sacred space that feels safe to people
in this room that are gonna do some work
some soul work but that is you and you
feel like you are not on me you feel
like you are wandering on a desert road
and you feel forsaken by God we want to
pray with you and I want to pray over
you so that you leave difference not
forsaken and forlorn but fully loved by
a good God if that’s you right now will
you please just raise your hand to
acknowledge where you’re at God whoa yes
hands everywhere praise Jesus I’m gonna
pray over us
and those online I believe in faith
you’re having a come-to-jesus moment
father god I come before you and I pray
for every single man woman and child the
sound of this message is experiencing
a feeling of bitterness depression maybe
anxiety about the future I pray Lord God
that you breathe on their soul that you
awake in their hearts you captivate
their mind so that they feel a tangible
presence of you in the name of Jesus we
pray amen amen
and before we go because this is like my
favorite part as Ruth gave her life away
Jesus gave His life away so that we can
experience new life in him and maybe
this is your first time to
transformation Church maybe you’re
watching online maybe this is the first
time you’ve ever heard the gospel today
we want to invite you to experience not
a Boaz as a kinsman redeemer but Jesus
Christ as our real Redeemer who could
take our sin you could take our junk and
make something beautiful out of the
ashes of our life so if you’ve never
accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and
Savior in a second we’re gonna give you
that opportunity but maybe maybe you’ve
come today and you know that you have
been so far from God the biblical word
is repent or return from the life that
we were living we turn from our sin and
we come back to God that’s a repent and
maybe this is your opportunity to
respond but maybe maybe you’ve grown up
in church maybe you have been coming
here for a few weeks maybe a few months
trying to figure out if this is your
vibe and eventually your tribe but
you’ve never confessed Jesus Christ
publicly see Jesus says if you come if
you profess me in front of man I’m
professing from the my father in Romans
tells us that if we confess with our
mouth and believe in our heart that we
are saved guess what we will be saved
and so right now I’m gonna do something
brave with every eye open and every head
lift and I’m gonna give people in this
house an opportunity to say yes to Jesus
I’m gonna count to three and you’re
gonna shoot your hand up in faith so we
can acknowledge you but one by you
raising your hand you are saying Jesus
Christ is the Lord and Savior of my life
today I choose Jesus to guide me to is I
believe it through the remission the
shedding of Christ’s blood I can be
forgiven that there is no sin to
separate me from God because he came
down for me and third I am believing
that his presence His Holy Spirit will
come and reside in me
so that is you you are saying yes to
Jesus for the first time you’re
repenting and coming back to God or this
is a public direct declaration of faith
one two three will you raise your hand
[Applause]
[Music]
god bless you god bless you
is there anyone else your heart is
pounding your heart is pounding you’re
like I need to add on so embarrassed
will you raise your hand high raise your
hand high
yeah yeah
we are celebrating a we’re gonna we’re
all gonna break can we stand to our feet
can we start every because we’re gonna
pray as a family we don’t want you to
make the decision alone
welcome to Bethlehem the house of bread
you thought you’re in Tulsa but you’re
actually in the family of Jesus Christ
guess what we’re all Jewish today okay
we’re gonna pray this prayer of
salvation this prayer in our heart
that’s gonna declare us together the
decision that we choose Jesus can we all
say dear Jesus forgive me of my sins
cleanse my heart cleanse my mind give me
a clean conscience fill me with your
spirit to do what you’ve called me to do
today I choose you Jesus as my savior
and the name of Jesus can we all say
